FEASTS OF THE WEEK

OUR LADY OF JASNA GORA (Thursday) - The image portrays the Holy Mother pensive in sufferings, with deep sorrow reflected in her eyes and clouded brow. Science traces the origin of the Picture to the 5th or 6th century AD. The dark colouring on the faces and hands is characteristic of pictures painted during this period. In the year 1382, the Pauline Fathers were entrusted with the guarding of the Miraculous Painting of Our Lady of Jasna Gora.

BLESSED DOMINIC OF THE MOTHER OF GOD (Barberi) was born in Viterbo, Italy in 1792. He was drawn to the Passionist Order, and was ordained. He proved a very devoted preacher and missioner throughout Italy, but he conceived a desire to help spread the Faith in England. Unexpectedly he was offered the opportunity to work in England arriving here in 1841. The beginning of his work was far from auspicious. He had virtually no English, and he went about in his cassock. But in England Catholic priests did not wear clerical dress so as not to attract opposition and jibes. Dominic would have none of this, but he was attacked, jeered at and had things thrown at him by mobs. Nevertheless he persevered, and his holiness impressed many, both Catholics and non-Catholics. He set up a mission in Staffordshire, at Aston near Stone, and from there founded four houses of Passionist Fathers. He travelled around especially in North Staffs., encouraging many Catholics to express their faith more openly. Newman was greatly impressed by Dominic's evangelical spirit, and he, Newman, was received into the Church by Dominic. But his incessant labours took their toll, dying of a heart attack on Reading Station, age 57. As he lay dying he murmured "Thy Will be done: in peace will I sleep and take my rest". Dominic of the Mother of God, continue to pray for England which was so dear to you
